Frequently Asked Questions:
The top part of my blog got all screwed up, with the bio area being overlapped
If your blog looks something like this:
The problem you’re having with the masthead image and the bio is because you’ve run out of room for your list of links, to fix that:
- shrink your font-size,
- shrink the space between the links, or
- shorten the link text (e.g. “Website” instead of “My Really Long Website Title “)
- some combination of the above
to shrink font size, edit line #81 of style.css, which looks like this:
#ppt_topnav li a {
font-size: 16px; /* font size of top links */
}
to change space between links, edit line #204, which looks like this:
#ppt_topnav li {
margin-right: 25px;
}

Hi Jared,
My flash header is, for some reason, covering my bio pic. I did make the header bigger (about 400px, which i would like to leave at this size if possible) and I was able to move the bio text down so that there is a space between the two, but for some reason I can’t figure out how to move down the bio pic.
Any info you could give on where to start would be great!
Thanks very much,
Kristin
No matter what I try from the above Jared I cannot get my Bio & photo to be viewed correctly in Safari – perfect in IE
Pleas help
Cheryl
Cheryl,
You need to go smaller with your font size or remove a link or section, it’s just too big still.
Hey Jared –
Rockin theme you’ve supplied.
Have a few questions you might be able to answer and offer even more customization:
1. Can you show us how to move the nav bar below the flash header.
2. Can you show the code or css that allows to move the bio section around: i.e Move pic to left side, or break the section into thirds for maybe a pic:text:twitter badge?
Also- great heads up on firebug – good even for guys who can barely spell htlm.. i mean html.
Thanks in advance -
Stephen
Jared,
Quick question. Where on the style sheet would I reduce the height of the bio area? Instead of using an image of me, I created a 908 px by 125 px gif with my blog name, etc. I would like to reduce the height so there isn’t so much white space after the “biopic.gif” and before the first post.
Thanks.
Lora
@Lora: 2 things: in the stylesheet following line 277, fiddle with margins and turn off border if you don’t want it there. then, open up bio.php and delete the whole “div” with the class of “bio” and all the tags in between (h2 and p). (don’t delete the closing tag for “indexbio”)
Im not sure if this is the right spot but my logo has disappeared. The jpg file is still in the images section of my WP area but its just not visiable when you view the blog. Are you able to lead me in the right direction as to what the problem might be. The logo is quite important to the blog so I’d love it back!
Cheers
Nicole
@Nicole: I sent you an email. did you get it?
Hey Jared, I don’t seem to have received the email. I got the standard email but not any other. Can you please send it again. Cheers Nicole
@Nicole: I just got a message that your email got bounced back to me. I’ll try again, but if that doesn’t work, do you have an alternate email?
i am having this problem but for a different reason.
i still have a “website” category shpwing up on my blog although the category has been deleted.
i have emptied cache already too so that is not the problem.
why is this still showing up?
i do not want this link at the top.
all the rest are how i want them.
thanks!
well i fixed the problem but not the way i wanted to. there is a category “website” that is not showing up on my back end but is showing up on my blog.
i had to delete the category “links” that i had wanted to list my old blog, website, and other links under but had to delete.
why is this “website” category not showing up. i am so confused already:)
oh oh i figured it out! i feel so smart even though i have absolutely no clue what i just did but i followed directions and it worked!
sorry about all of the comments.
thanks again.
Is it possible for me to shrink the width of the logo image to allow more room for the list of links? My logo image actually has a lot of white space that is not necessary and would free up a fair amount of space for the crowded links. Thanks!
@Laura: yeah, look on about line 165 of your style sheet for this line (under h1#blog-title):
width: 397px; /* smaller if narrower logo – gives links more room */
just change that to the width you need, and it will free up more room.
I got rid of the shadow, but as soon as I did that, my bio pic is on top of the bio. I liked the bio to be at the right of the bio text.
Also, the images all went together, whereas before, they were all slightly separated.
thanks.
@Jerry Frazier: I think you got it working again, correct? Likely there was some kind of syntax error in your stylesheet after you edited or something that was messing up a bunch of the styles…
I had gotten rid of the biopic, then changed the current image and changed teh settings, so I could have my new biopic. Again, I had no bio pic there for a while. I also added flashing header slideshow. I can’t see my biopic. Can’t figure out if this is the same question the others were asking, but my slideshow isn’t covering it up, it just isn’t there. Help!
The drop down part of my Archives and Catagories, etc. links, (above my header) are hiding behind my flash header when pointed to or clicked on so that the drop down list is not entirely visible. I’ve been searching the FAQ’s for a fix but haven’t been able to find one. How can I fix this. Sorry in advance if there’s a fix here that I’ve missed.
@Sharon: what’s the address of your blog, and exactly what browser and operating system are you using when you see the problem?
I’m on Firefox and I use Windows XP (service pack 3). My blog address is http://www.earthtonescustomphotos.com/skblog.
Jared, I still have not resolved the issue of my top nav links drop down list hiding behind my flash header. Any clues? My previous post is above with some of my info. Thanks!
@Sharon: did you use the flashfader plugin, or did you swap that out with a custom .swf flash file?
I used the flashfader plugin that came with prophoto.
I did resize the flashfader, but the issue occured before I resized it.
@Sharon: ok, figured it out. you did use the flashfader plugin, but you didn’t follow the directions from the website for embedding it. i created a custom javascript file that solved the problem of the menus dissappearing behind the flash.
go back and read these directions and embed the flash that way and you should be fine:
http://www.professionalphotographertheme.com/flash/
That fix worked but now I have two flashfader headers. ??? I’ll be back if I can’t trouble shoot this.
Whew! Got that fixed, too. Looks like everything’s good now. Thanks!
YAY! this really helped!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
having the same issue with the header overlapping – i only added 3 letters to the top nav bar, and have removed the search button – so i should have enough space..? to solve it on my own, i simply made my bio section (which i did not want) a series of basically empty lines. works fine on the index page, but oopps, doesn’t solve the problem on archive pages ect… so… help please!
oh – and when i got my template – the stock header-masthead image was partially under the bio section.. don’t know if that has anything to do with my problems. it was cut off at the “create a 950×250….” line (everything below that in the image looked to be “under” the bio section). and fyi, i have NO CLUE about code and this stuff!
@lara: i just looked at your blog and i think your problem is actually that you deleted the bio section be removing all the text (except the periods). instead, you should follow the directions for removing the bio section in the FAQs.
i’ll try, but it was doing the same thing when i had the bio section there, as well as when i tried deleting it by your instructions (i actually added it back in, and added the “empty” lines in the bio section to push everything else down. see how it looks fine when that bio section is there, but when you go to an archive page (where i assume the bio page wouldn’t be present) the text overlaps the header…? i’ll go remove the bio section, and see if that will fix it…. and report back.
yeah – same problem. i removed the bio all together, and now even on the index page, the post title is overlapping the header picture. i feel like an idiot… this stuff is starting to make sense, and i just can’t sort this out….
@lara: figured it out. at some point, you must have edited the height of the section that contains your flash header in your stylesheet. your stylesheet says this at around line 267:
#header-masthead {
height: 200px; /*height of masthead*/
background-image: none;
}
that 200 should say 250. that’ll fix it.
::smooch::
i DID mess with that trying to sort it out the problem, and changed it to be as large as 400, and it didn’t fix it. so i changed it back (obviously wrongly). and i must not have cleared my cache when i ‘checked’ to see if the 400 made a difference.
Hi Jared,
How can i remove the the stock header-masthead image, it is still there (overlapping my bio) after installing the flashheader.
Marieke
@Marieke: re-read the directions on activating the flash fader. one of the steps has you delete the code that inserts the stock image. you must have skipped that step.
J,
I was reading through the various comments/questions and came across a post from 5/10 by Stephen Hinault. His question:
1. Can you show us how to move the nav bar below the flash header.
I’ve been altering [with careful comments and notes] index.php by trying to move some of the calls around and I’ve gotten some mixed but not acceptable results. I’ve tried to use Firebug to review some of your other client sites which have the masthead > nav > bio layout but cannot figure where I am missing the proper order.
Other symptom: Even when I comment out some of the div calls to start from “scratch”, I’m seeing sections of my pages listed in a “list” format.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Bobby
@Bobby: I can’t tell you how to move the nav below the header, because it is too complex for a tutorial and not a basic supported customization. if anyone is interested in that, they’ll have to work through it on their own or you can email prophotoinstall at gmail dot com and we can do it for you.
also, sometimes when you use HTML comments to commment out PHP code, weird things happen and browsers still display some stuff. better to back up the file and then just delete the parts you don’t want to use.
My logo, header/flash image are both in the right place. But when using Safari, the About link (Pages) is underneath the Website link. I Firefox it looks just fine.
I shortened the space between links from 25 px to 20px.
Not sure what else to do.
wendy g
thanks for any help!
@wendy g: i’m pretty sure the problem is that you commented out a bunch of stuff in the topnav.php file, but didn’t comment it out exactly correctly. i think you left an extra closing tag or something. doublecheck all of that, and you should just make a backup copy and then delete the parts you want instead of commenting them out.
Jared,
My bio section is STILL covered up with the header and I have tried ALL above. Could you please help me to straighten this out. Thanks for your time.
@Kayla Paler: what’s your blog address so i can look? the one you left when you commented doesn’t seem to work?
Can I jump in quick? I did a boo boo and I lost my top nav links.. All of it.. Is there a fix I can just put back into the sytle sheet? Hopefully I find this again and can check for any help. I’ll keep looking.
Thanks
@Carmen: did you figure it out? i can see your top nav links just fine.
Hey Vallie,You got me:)I will thing about it!
