Q: How do I add a background image like wallpaper on the background of my blog?
A: ProPhoto comes installed with no background image (actually it has an invisible image installed), but you may want to add one like the lovely paisley on this blog. To do so, save your background image as “bg.gif” and use a free FTP program or a web-based file manager utility to upload it into the “images” folder of the “prophoto” theme folder, overwriting the existing “bg.gif” file. If you are using a “.jpg” instead of a “.gif” for your background image , you’ll need to modify line 29 of the “Stylesheet” (style.css) so that it says “bg.jpg” instead of “bg.gif.”

Do you know how to keep the background static while the blog scrolls? I really like that effect.
@Shaun: yeah, but you’ll need to combine the two css lines about background-image: and background-color: by making a new rule like this:
background: #878787 url(images/bg.gif) repeat-x fixed;
I tried doing what you suggested to make the background static…and it worked…however the background pattern only covers about an inch at the top and then stops. What did I do wrong? Thanks in advance.
One more quick question. Let’s say instead of having a repeating tiled .gif image I wanted just one large static image. Is there a specific size i would need to create this image as?
@matt: if you want the image to tile completely (not just one inch across the top) but stay static, change the code to:
background: #878787 url(images/bg.gif) repeat fixed;
If you want to use one image, it’s hard to say how big it should be, probably at least wider than the blog, so maybe 1024px or something, and then you’ll want to center it like this:
background: #878787 url(images/bg.gif) no-repeat fixed top center;
You’re the best Jared. You know, before I got this blog I didn’t know ONE thing about code, blogs, websites…nothing. But now, because of you, I have my first blog-site up and running, I can navigate through FTP, and am even going through this code and making some sense of it. You have done a great thing for the photography community and I hope your success reflects what you have given.
I did like the instructions said and tried to add a background image, but it doesn’t show up. Any ideas? I’m creating my own in photoshop. Saved it as a jpg and changed line 29 to say jpg. I used Fetch to upload the image. Is there another step I need to do?
So, suppose I wanted a static background image (jpg) with no tiling…. Where exactly would I insert the new rule? Would I omit lines 29 and 30 and replace them with:

Not sure if this is the place to ask this, but have been searching and can’t find an answer to my question.
I set up my blog on my huge iMac screen and it looks great. However, I checked it on my PC which has a smaller monitor (15″ I think), and I have to scroll horizontally and my background image barely shows.
Is this an Internet Explorer problem or is it because of the small screen? I’m thinking it’s not the screen size because it looks find on my little mac laptop.

@LisaH: the blog is designed to fit without scrolling on a screen that is 1024 pixels wide. if your PC has a 800×600 resolution, you will have to scroll. it is only a very small percentage of computers that have a resolution that small any more.
i have the same problem as @jamie. i want a single static image – which i created, resized, and downloaded – and changed the stylesheet code as instructed above, but now my background is just plain white. the image doesn’t show up at all. any ideas?
@andi: you’ve got the css like this:
background: url(images/bg.jpg) no repeat-x fixed top center;
it needs to be:
background: url(images/bg.jpg) repeat-x fixed top center;
or
background: url(images/bg.jpg) no-repeat fixed top center;
you’ve got sort of a combination of the two, which is why it isn’t working
How big should I be making my background image so that it loads up fast?
@Rebekah Towers: we recommend keeping it under 50k if possible. 100k if necessary, but it is advised not to go bigger than that.
