Does My Webhost Work with ProPhoto?

Do you already have a webhosting account for another site or online service? Find out below whether you can use this host for a ProPhoto installation.

Almost all webhosts work just fine to install WordPress and ProPhoto.  Below is a list of hosting companies that work fine.

These companies web hosting packages CAN host a WordPress/ProPhoto
blog:

  • BlueHost (ProPhoto’s and WordPress.org’s #1 recommended webhost)
  • BluDomain
  • GoDaddy (preferably Linux hosting packages, not windows)
  • 1 and 1
  • Everybodysmile
  • BigFolio
  • WestHost
  • HostGator
  • DreamHost
  • Media Temple
  • HostMonster
  • Creative Motion Design (CMD)
  • Portfoliositez
  • IX Web Hosting
  • lots more…

Below is a list of web “hosts” (some of these are not true web-hosting companies, which is why they are on the list) that DON’T work for installing WordPress and ProPhoto.

These companies web services CAN’T host a WordPress/ProPhoto
blog:

  • WordPress.com
  • LiveBooks
  • Photobiz
  • Smugmug
  • Yahoo! (while they can host WordPress blogs, we haven’t confirmed ProPhoto works well on their servers)
  • Showit
  • Squarespace
  • MobileMe
  • Google (web hosting)
  • Wix
  • Truepath

However, if you have a website with a company listed above YOU CAN STILL USE PROPHOTO, but you would just need a separate hosting account (and separate domain name or sub-domain) for hosting your blog.

(For example, if you have a website and hosting with Photobiz for your domain ‘http://www.coolphotosite.com’, you would need separate webhosting for your blog.  What you could do is set-up separate hosting for a sub-domain, like ‘blog.coolphotosite.com’, for your blog.  But in order to do this, you’d need to work with Photobiz to setup an “A Record” so that all traffic to your blog gets routed appropriately.  Once it was all set up, then you could create links from your blog to your site and vice versa.

Just be aware, that we do not provide any webhosting support like setting up domain names, routing, etc. It would be entirely your responsibility to arrange all of this with your webhosts.)

Still wondering about a company?

If you’re still wondering if your particular webhost works — it probably does if it’s not on the “CAN’T host” above list. If you want to know for sure, don’t ask us (because we don’t know), instead, email or call your tech support and ask them this:

“Hi, I have a website hosted by you. I want to know if I can install a WordPress blog under my hosting plan. I need to know if my server has PHP and MySQL, and I’ll need FTP access and the ability to create a new MySQL database for my blog. Can you let me know if that is possible?”
