If you were trying to follow the instructions to update your ProPhoto theme files and you got to a screen that looks like the one shown below (or you started the upload, but it failed and you got some sort of error message), that means that your particular webhost is not capable of using the most simple form of WordPress’s auto-theme updater, and you’ll need to do it manually.
If you see this screen, the first thing to try is plugging your webhosting account FTP login information into the form shown above. Put in your FTP host (server) address, username and password, and click proceed. If it works, you’re golden. Often it does not work, even with the correct info, and if that’s you, keep reading.
Step 1: Delete your old theme folder
The first thing you need to do is connect with your FTP program to your blog’s web hosting server, and navigate into the installation folder for your blog.
Then, inside of that, find the “wp-content” folder.
Inside that folder, find the “themes” folder.
Inside that folder, find and delete the “prophoto3” folder. (Don’t worry, you’re not losing any customizations or uploaded files, those are all stored elsewhere.)
Step 2: Upload the new theme folder
Next, take the zip file with the updated files in it and unzip it. BE CAREFUL before you upload that you don’t get two “prophoto3″ folders nested inside each other — a “prophoto3″ folder with another “prophoto3″ folder inside of it. It should be just a single folder named exactly “prophoto3″ with a bunch of files and subfolders inside of it.
Upload that entire “prophoto3″ folder into the same “themes” folder where you just deleted the old version.
That’s it! You’re done!
