Linking to PDF Files

Some folks have Adobe Acrobat files (PDF files) with information that they would like their visitors to access.  These files are handy because they format nicely, and only require Adobe Reader to view, which most people have installed on their computers.  You can upload these .pdf files to any page in your site by using the upload button in your page editor.

Link to a file by uploading in a Page or Post

The upload screen works with other files just like images, except clicking on the “insert” button will insert a link into your post content that takes visitors to your file.

You can also insert a link which takes visitors to a separate WordPress Page containing your attachment.
A link like this allows viewers to easily see the file as well as download the file to their computer by right-clicking on it in a special page on your site which is automatically and temporarily created by WordPress to present your attachment.

The type of link inserted into your post depends on which of the buttons you click in the Upload popup window.

After clicking “Insert into Post” in the Upload popup window, you will have a link in your post taking visitors to your file.

Link to a file using Media Library

If you want to link to a file like a PDF without adding it to a Page or Post, you can upload your file into WordPress in the “Media” > “Library” area to the left in your WordPress admin area.

Click to upload your file and copy the File URL field contents in the resulting screen.

You can create a menu link in your nav menu, using the PDF file address you just copied as the Directly entered link address. Or, use it in a Text Widget to place in a Bio Area, Sidebar, Footer, or other widget area.

You now have a custom link that opens your PDF file. If the user’s browser doesn’t have the Adobe Reader plugin, they will be able to download the file and view it on their computer.
